Last updated: October 16th, 2022

Most of the people around the world consider purchasing a fan-based on style and quality. This is one of the wrong things they do, a ceiling fan should not be selected only based on style and quality alone, but based on the wattage, which is related to power consumption.

Ceiling Fan Wattage Understanding

Before we go in deep into the importance of wattage and everything related to it, in this article, we will provide every detail, including the basics. Let us start with,

What is wattage?

Wattage is denoted in watts, and it is simply the unit of energy or power that an electronic or electrical device consumes. Almost every device that is powered by electricity has a wattage, and the total wattage is what your electricity bill is all about.

Why is ceiling fan wattage important?

The cost of per unit of electricity around the world is different for different places, while it could be the same for some states, it could differ in districts and states. If the wattage of the ceiling fan you purchase is too much and the per-unit charge of electricity is high in the specific place, then the electricity bill you receive would have an astonishingly high amount on it. This is why it is very important that you check the specification and check with your electricity supplier and purchase a ceiling fan based on this information.

Which is better a DC or AC ceiling fan –

This is where most of the people get confused, in the beginning, most of the fans were based on AC. One of the main reasons was because designing a fan-based on DC supply was not successful. However, today we have several top-rated DC ceiling fans.

Now, you might wonder what difference does a DC and AC ceiling fan has, you have quoted the right question. The simplest and the most important difference between a DC and AC ceiling fan is that a DC ceiling fan consumes drastically very less power. Therefore, the electricity bill would be comparatively very low. But, remember, if you go looking for an DC ceiling fan, the option is very limited as of now. There are only 4 or 5 high quality and successful DC fans out there.

How to calculate ceiling fan wattage –

There is no mandatory law that holds the manufacturer or brand responsible for declaring the wattage of the product they sell. This is why a majority of the ceiling fans might not come with the wattage. However, for marketing purpose they would mention some value, this value is commonly the amp counts. If you get the amps value, we could calculate the wattage of the ceiling fan. Here is everything you need to know about it.

  • If the manufacturer has declared the wattage rating of the ceiling fan, it could be in the specifications of the product or the fan itself. Every fan would come with a label mentioning the brand, model, serial number, and along with it comes wattage or amps. Check your fan for this label and the data on it.
  • If the brands have mentioned the amp count, then it is easy to calculate the wattage. Remember, the amp counts ranges between 0.5 to 1.0.
  • The wattage can be calculated in one single step, multiply the amp count with 120. For example, if your ceiling fan amp count is 0.6 amps, then the wattage of your fan is 0.6 x 120 = 72-watts.

Once you have calculated the wattage, the daily unit energy and monthly unit energy rating could be calculated with ease.

Daily units – ( total wattage x total hour usage)/1000

Monthly units – total daily usage x total number of days in the month

Bottom line –

Ceiling fans are one of the most used and in-demand electrical devices on the market today. The demand for ceiling fans has always been on the rise and most of the people end up regretting purchasing a wrong fan; this is why you need to consider a wattage along with style, price, and quality.
