Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime

Today I will be sharing a very unique and flavourful yet simple recipe of Katla fish called Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime. Gondhoraj bhetki is a very popular recipe. Cooking a bhetki is always a delight! But cooking a Katla can be tricky at times specially when it’s cooked for people who are sensitive to typical strong fishy smell. This recipe of Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime usually over powers the strong fishy odour of Katla, all the more as it uses the aromatic Kaffir lime. Kaffir lime or gondhoraj lebu is a special kind of lemon found in Bengal. So let’s see how to cook Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime.

Time required to cook Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime: 30 minutes

Ingredients required to make Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime:

  • 6 Katla or Rui fish or likes
  • A paste of 2 onions, 7 – 9 garlic cloves, 1 inch ginger, 3 green chillies
  • Turmeric powder
  • Salt
  • Mustard oil
  • Black peppercorn – 6 – freshly grounded
  • Kaffir lime or gondhoraj lebu – 1
  • Pinch of nutmeg powder
  • Coconut milk – 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies – slitted – 3

Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime – The recipe:

  • Marinate fish with turmeric powder, salt, black pepper powder and juice extracted from 1/4 th of Kaffir Lime. Marinate for 30 minutes
  • Heat mustard oil in a wok, until smoking point is reached
  • Fry the fish pieces in oil till both sides are golden brown. Keep them aside
  • In the same oil, add onion paste. Add salt. Cook till oil starts to release
  • Add 1/4 th lemon juice. Stir
  • Add coconut milk. Bring it to boil
  • Add fried fish, left over marinade, slitted green chillies and a little more water. Cover cook and Simmer for 6 – 8 minutes more
  • Switch off flame. Sprinkle a little nutmeg powder and 1/2 Kaffir Lime juice. Cover and let it rest for 10 minutes
  • Serve Gondhoraj Katla |Fish with Kaffir Lime with a plate of steamed rice!
