How To Repair Sewing Machines At Home

Last updated: October 19th, 2022

If you have a sewing machine at home, then you would be familiar with the issues it experiences on daily basis. Whether it is thread clogging or noise movements, sewing machines are prone to these minor issues. That’s why it is important to learn to repair it at home to avoid costly servicing fees.

The following hacks will not only save you a lot of time and money but also make your sewing more efficient! So if you are curious to learn more, then stick to the very end.

Change the needle.

One of the main reasons why your sewing machine may not be working smoothly is because of the needle. The needle may be rusty or slightly bent. Simply place a new needle on the machine and discard the old one to smooth the function of the machine.

Noisy Machine while in use.

This mostly happens if the threads are intertwined between the hook race. Check the hook and untangle the threads. A.lso check for screws and if they are loose, repair them with a screwdriver.

Thread bunches up during sewing.

This is a very common problem while working with a sewing machine. The best way to correct this is to lift the pressure foot lifter and rethread the sewing machine.

Lint within the feed dog.

This mostly happens because of not cleaning the machine. Clean your machine on a monthly basis. Also, clean the teeth inside with a brush properly so that no lint or dust blocks them.

The needle breaks while sewing.

You are using the wrong kind of needle for your fabric. A tough fabric requires an equally tough needle. Needles come in various sizes (mostly from 8-18). Use a small-sized needle for light fabrics like silk and chiffon and a tough needle of size 16 /18 for tough fabrics like denim.

The needle thread breaks often.

This may happen for various reasons.

  1. The thread is either too thin or too thick for the needle. This creates unnecessary strain on the needle. So, mount a proper thread before sewing.
  2. The needle may not be threaded properly. So, check the machine for faults or completely rethread the machine.
  3. The needle-thread tension may be too high. If the thread is mounted too tight, loosen it for smooth operation. Your machine will also not work appropriately if the thread is too loose either.
  4. Stitches are irregular.

This mostly happens if the needle is bent or broken. Simply replace the needle to get unwrinkled results. Uneven and bumpy sewing may also happen if you pull the fabric from the back while stitching, i.e., forcing the fabric to go through. This may even break the sewing machine. Also, if you are stitching a very thin fabric, you can keep a piece of paper under the fabric to prevent seam wrinkling.

Keep the sewing machine clean.

Keeping your machine clean on a regular basis can save you from a lot of the above problems. Disassemble your machine once in a while and give it a proper cleaning. Also, lubricate its parts to ensure smoother operation and the machine’s longevity.

If you use your machine every day, clean it once a week, if you use it once a week, then clean it just once a month and for seldom use, once every three-four months is fine.

Conclusion

The above mentioned are the most common troubles that you can face while using a sewing machine. In conclusion, the best way to keep yourself away from all this trouble is by simply cleaning and lubricating your machines at regular intervals. It also keeps the sewing machine nice and shiny and prevents it from rusting even when not in use.
