How to Select a Ceiling Fan That Has Both Lights and Controls

Last updated: October 15th, 2022

Ceiling fans have evolved just like any other thing on this planet. We have come from normal to fully automatic washing machines. And from common ceiling fans to the ones with lights and controls. Such fans look aesthetic and offer better functionality.

However, not all these fans are reliable. So, to make a good decision, you need to put in some research. And this article will help you do that. Here’s a guide to help you select a ceiling fan with lights and controls. So, if you’re ready, let’s start.

Factors you should consider

Choose a fan that fits your room.

This is a no-brainer, but it’s important. A fan that is too big or too small for the room won’t be effective. It won’t circulate the air properly. If you have a room of 50 square feet or less, you can go with a fan that has a sweep of 29″ or less. Such fans are usually for the walk-in closets, etc. However, for your bedroom, you’ll need a fan with a sweep of at least 42″. So, choose accordingly.

Lighting Options

Now, as you’re looking for a fan with lights, you need to know some things. There are various lighting options available to choose from. Halogen lamps, LEDs, fluorescent lamps being some common examples.

Sometimes a lighting kit is available with the fan. And sometimes, you need to buy it separately from the retailer. Also, these lights are not available at every other shop because of special arrangements. So, before buying, make sure to check whether you’ll need to get a lighting kit or not.

Brightness

You’ll find various fans with different brightness options. Some are just for the ambiance, but some are bright enough to let you read without additional light. So, if you want to read in that light, make sure the fanlight’s intensity is bright. Otherwise, you can go for a fan with optimum brightness.

Check the motor for efficiency & airflow.

This is yet another factor to consider. The quality of the motor will decide the airflow and the energy consumption. If you’re buying a fan for an outdoor space, a motor with low airflow will work. It is because you won’t need much air circulation in the outdoors as opposed to closed regions.

One of the most commonly available and energy-efficient motors is the BLDC motor. Its also known as a brushless DC motor. The motors are both powerful and energy-efficient. The BLDC fans offer good airflow and consume around 70% less energy as compared to standard motors. So, check the motor before buying. Make sure it’s BLDC if you can.

Check for the power consumption.

The major part is covered in the above part. But this is about the power consumption of the lights. Ceiling fans with lights usually consume more power. But the ones with good energy ratings are efficient. So, check the power consumption once before buying a ceiling fan.

Fan Controls

The most common type of fan control is the switch or wall regulators. However, the fans with lights come with different types of controls. Here are some of the options: –

Remote control: Fans with remote control are suited for rooms with high ceilings. It’s because it becomes hard to reach the ceiling to change the lighting with pull cords. However, with the fans with remote control, you can change the intensity of the lighting along with the fan speed.

Pull Cords: Another common option is the pull cord. You must have seen this option in the wall fans that oscillate. There are different, usually two cords, one for controlling the fan speed and the other for the light settings. As you have to pull the cord, these fans are suited for pretty low ceilings.

Reverse rotation feature

You won’t find the reverse rotation feature in many fans. This feature, as the name suggests, allows opposite or reverse rotation. Now, this feature is useful for the winter seasons. It helps in circulating warm air from near the ceiling in the entire room. You can think of this as a climate control feature.

Distance from the ceiling

For effective air circulation and airflow, perfect distancing is important. The fan should neither be too far nor too close to the ceiling. The blades should be at least 10 inches away from the ceiling. So, make sure to buy a fan with a pole length that allows at least 10inch of space between the ceiling fan and the ceiling.

Conclusion

Finding the right fan with lights and controls is not easy. However, if you go through the above factors, you can change that notion. The above list of factors has everything you need to know to make an informed decision. So, consider them carefully and make the right choice.
