Urad dal | Biuli dal Recipe

Biuli dal is one of my favourite dal. To me the memories of Biuli or Urad dal goes back to childhood, when maa would invariably make Urad dal | Biuli dal on Tuesdays, since that was marked as a vegetarian day for our family. Along with Urad dal | Biuli dal and rice, would be posto baata and aloo-posto. Today let me share the Urad dal | Biuli dal Recipe which maa cooks in her bengali simple style!

Total time required for the Urad dal | Biuli dal Recipe: 45 minutes

Ingredients needed for Urad dal | Biuli dal Recipe:

  • 1 cup Biuli dal
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Mustard oil
  • Fennel seeds – 1/3 tsp
  • Kalonji or onion seeds – 1/3 rd tsp
  • 1/2 tsp hing it asafetida
  • 3 red dry chillies
  • 1 inch ginger – grated
  • 2 bay leaves

Urad dal | Biuli dal Recipe:

  • Dry roast the Biuli dal or Urad dal till it turns a bit brownish – reddish in colour
  • Wash it and put it into a pressure cooker with water, turmeric powder, salt for upto 7 – 8 whistles
  • Once the pressure settles in, add water and bring the dal to boil. Cook till it comes to the desired consistency. The dal should be mashable
  • Now, in a tadka pan, heat Mustard oil. Add bay leaves, red dry chillies, ginger, kalonji, fennel seeds and prepare the tadka. Pour it over the dal and simmer for 2 more minutes
  • Sprinkle hing or asafetida and cover with lid. Switch off flame
